Quick answer
PDO (polydioxanone) threads are absorbable threads placed under the skin with a needle or cannula. Smooth threads mainly stimulate collagen and skin quality; barbed threads have small barbs that also provide some lifting support. They suit mild to moderate laxity and the body absorbs them over time.
Smooth or barbed: the difference
- Smooth: create a mesh under the skin that stimulates collagen; used for firmness and texture.
- Barbed: have barbs that anchor in the tissue and allow slight repositioning of areas such as the jawline or cheeks.
Who they may suit
People with mild to moderate laxity looking for a non-surgical option. With marked laxity results are limited. They can be combined with a collagen biostimulator or HIFU, depending on the plan.

How it works and recovery
Under local anaesthetic, the doctor inserts the threads along set paths. Swelling, bruising, a pulling sensation or small irregularities may appear and tend to improve over the following days. For the first weeks avoid exaggerated facial movements, massage and intense exercise, as advised.
Risks
As with any procedure there are risks, such as infection, asymmetry or a palpable thread. It does not replace surgery. The medical assessment checks whether it suits you and explains what to expect.
Frequently asked questions
How long do they last?
The threads are absorbed over months; the collagen effect may last longer, to a variable degree.
Are they visible?
They should not be visible. Small early irregularities usually settle.
Does it hurt?
It is done under local anaesthetic; there may be tenderness for a few days afterwards.
When will I see results?
Barbed threads have some immediate effect; collagen stimulation shows over weeks.
Take the first step with an assessment
At the consultation, the doctor examines you, explains the options and tells you clearly what is and is not suitable in your case.
